For today's post, I decided to follow the "Where I'm From" prompt because it was the choice that spoke out to me the most. My goal was to outline some key memories I've made growing up in my hometown and essential places in the surrounding areas over the years. All the memories and places I highlighted have been central to my life. I want whoever reads this to feel nostalgic for their own special memories. I am not someone who usually dabbles in poetry, but I do write a lot of prose, so I used my experience in prose-writing to help construct this free-verse poem.
Where I'm From
I’m from…
The almost-city town lying right across the most famous city in the world
The sprawling green park smelling of burned corn and thick grass
Kids on scooters and bikes will zoom past you, laughing their lungs out
The man-made lake with its geesy, turtley, and ducky charm
The never-ending Bergenline Avenue attractions
A piece of Latin America, a refuge for the homesick
Where you’ll find a live goat, the best churrasco you’ll ever eat, and a bustling station
I’m from two people from opposite sides of the world meeting
One near the Equator, the other near Guatemala
I’m from walking along the pier with you, hearing all the voices moving by
Sharing strawberry ice cream and talking about how we’d grow an extra arm or three fingers
If we dared to swim in the Hudson River
I’m from a hundred Kodak photos of holding my ginger cat
And one photo of me posing in front of the mirror that has reflected me
For twenty years
